A BIOGRAPHY OF IQBAL KARIM BHUIYAN
Retired Bangladeshi General Iqbal Karim Bhuiyan held the position of Chief of Army Staff for the Bangladesh Army from 2012 to 2015. He began his term on June 25, 2012 and officially retired on the same day in 2015. On March 19, 1976, he joined “Bangladesh Military Academy”. He was commissioned on November 30, 1976 as a member of the Infantry (East Bengal Regiment).
Over the course of his 39-year military career, Iqbal served in a variety of positions, including commanding three Infantry Battalions, an Infantry Brigade, and three Infantry Divisions. In addition, he held the positions of Chief of General Staff, Colonel Staff of the Bangladesh Army, and Platoon Commander of the Military Academy. He was also a participant in Operation Desert Storm and was awarded the Liberation of Kuwait Medal.

Early Life & Education
Born on June 2, 1957 in Comilla, Iqbal Karim received his education at Comilla Zilla School and Faujdarhat Cadet College. He has completed several courses overseas, such as the Company Commander’s Course in Malaysia and the Course on Peace-Keeping for Decision Makers at the Defence Institute of International Legal Studies in Rhode Island, USA. In addition, he graduated from the Defense Services Command and Staff College as well as the United States Army Command and General Staff College.
Career
On 19 March 1976, Iqbal Karim enrolled in the 3rd BMA SSC course at the Bangladesh Military Academy and became an officer in the East Bengal Regiment on 30 November 1976. Throughout his career, Iqbal Karim held various esteemed positions in the Bangladesh Army, including Platoon Commander in the Bangladesh Military Academy and was the Director of “Staff of Defence Services Command and Staff College”. He was also actively involved in Operation Desert Storm, for which he was awarded the Kuwait Liberation Medal by the Government of Kuwait.
Additionally, Bhuiyan served as – the Commandant of several institutions such as the Defence Services Command and Staff College and the School of Infantry and Tactics. He was also appointed as the GOC of the 19th and 24th Infantry Divisions, as well as the CGS of the Bangladesh Army. In 2012, he was appointed as the Chief of Army Staff, in the place of General Md Abdul Mubeen, and promoted to full general on the same day.
During his tenure as Chief of Army Staff, Bhuiyan hosted “General Vincent Brooks of the United States Army Pacific command” in 2014 and inaugurated the Bangladesh Golf Academy in 2015. In 2012, He also invited Indian soldiers to visit Bangladesh and held a reception. In 2013, he raised the flags of two new infantry units, the 32nd Infantry Regiment and the 33rd Bangladesh Infantry Regiment, based in Jalalabad Cantonment.
Bhuiyan’s tenure as Chief of Army Staff ended on 25 June 2015 when General Abu Belal Muhammad Shafiul Huq came in his place. Before retiring, Bhuiyan had also served as the Chairman of Bangladesh Diesel Plant Limited and had been promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General in May 2010 when he served as the Quarter Master General of the Bangladesh Army.
Personal Life
Tahmina Yasmin is the spouse of Bhuiyan. He and his wife together have created a happy family with a son and two daughters.
