Abu Belal Muhammad Shafiul Haq, a retired general of the Bangladesh Army, was born on December 1, 1958. He served as the chief of army staff from June 25, 2015 to June 25, 2018. Before becoming the chief of army staff, he worked at the Prime Minister’s Office of the Armed Forces Division as a principal staff officer.
Haq has a wealth of experience, having served as an aide-de-camp to the president of Bangladesh, and he was commissioned into the Armoured corps of the Bangladesh Army through the 6th SSC (Short Service Commission) in June 1978.

Early Life & Education
Born on December 1st, 1958 in Noakhali, Bangladesh, Abu Belal Muhammad Shafiul Huq completed his Secondary School Certificate (SSC) from Dinajpur Zilla School in 1972. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree from Dhaka University, as well as a master’s degree in Defense Studies from National University Bangladesh and a master’s degree in philosophy from Bangladesh University of Professionals. Huq’s brother, Annisul Huq, was elected Mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation in April 2015.
Career
Abu Belal Muhammad Shafiul Huq was commissioned into the Bengal Lancers on June 18th, 1978, after completing his training as part of the 6th SSC (Short Service Commission). In recognition of his exceptional performance, he was awarded the Sword of Honor, which is presented to the most meritorious cadet in the Bangladeshi military forces. Over the course of his 40-year career, Huq held numerous command, staff, and instructional roles, including serving as the aide-de-camp (ADC) to the president of Bangladesh and as the military secretary and adjutant general of the army. He also commanded various units, brigades, and divisions, including two tank units, three brigades (one armored and two infantry), and two divisions (19th and 33rd).
In addition to his military service, Huq served as a military observer with the United Nations Iran-Iraq Military Observer Group (UNIIMOG) from 1988 to 1989.
On January 4th, 2007, he was appointed as the deputy force commander and chief military observer of UNMEE. Belal retired from the army on June 25th, 2018.
Personal Life
Shoma Huq is the spouse of Abu Belal Muhammad Shafiul Huq. Together they have a son named Marzuq and a daughter. Anisul Huq is Belal Muhammad Shafiul Huq’s elder brother who served as the first mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation. Their father, Shariful Huq, was a former director of Bangladesh Ansar who retired in 1982.
