Bishwajit’s nickname is Tultul. He spent his childhood in Chittagong district and later shifted to Dhaka permanently to build his career. At that time, he came to Dhaka with barely a few hundred takas to his name. Definitely it takes guts to be willing to pursue a career in Arts. As he was still not an adult, he had the spirit of adventure, where his emotion and passion got the superior priority over the practicality that a career in music might not make him well fed.
He obtained his primary education from Chittagong.  However, no information about his further studies has been found.

Career:

Bishwajit has been in the music industry for more than 4 decades, that is 40+ years.
From a very small age, Bishwajit started building up his career into music. When he was only 14, in 1977, he started his music career by performing on a radio show. There was no stopping from that onwards. From 1977 to 79, for 2 years, he was involved with a band named Rhythm-77. In 1979, he formed his own band and called it “Feelings”. After a while, he left it too and went on to pursue his solo career.  In 180, he appeared in front of the media and performed his very first television program on BTV.

His popular songs include: O Daktar, Tore Putul Er Moto Kore Shajiye, Tumi Roj Bikele, Premer Manush, Gonotontro, Tumi Jodi Bolo, Nirbashon, etc.
The song “Tore Putuler Moto” brought him into the limelight during that time.
‘90s kids, when they were teenagers, used to listen to these songs almost everywhere and every time. They would play them in CDs or DVDs or exchange songs in Bluetooth before the era of Youtube began.
Most of his songs were released in 2016. His songs (along with music videos) are now available on Youtube.
The films for which he sang songs were: Prem Kahini (1985), Protirodh (1987), Wrong Number (2004), Kukkhato Khuni (2000), Shami Strir Wada (2009), Jaago (2010), Ma Amar Chokher Moni (2011), Ek Mon Ek Pran (2012), etc.
In some of the films, he had sung more than 1 song for the same movie.
In 1985, he first gave his voice as a playback singer in the film Amra Dui Jon Duti Shanto Chele.
Kumar Bishwajit is quite famous for being a music composer too. In 2010, in the film ‘Swami Strir Wada’, he directed the film’s music. It was his very first film where he directed. Eventually he got an award for it too. 5 years later, in 2015, in a government funded film titled ‘Shutopar Thikana’, Kumar Bishwajit had directed music or songs of the films.
Kumar Bishwajit also served as a judge for different singing or musical talent hunt programs like Close Up 1, and Khudey Gaanraj, which aired on NTV and Channel I respectively.

Contribution:

In the mid-2000s, Bishwajit co-founded Gaanchill Music to nurture artists and give them a fair revenue share. He thus helped develop it to become one of the biggest labels in Bangladesh.

Personal Life:

As Bishwajit’s father was a businessman, the father wanted his son to be like him too. However, Bishwajit always dreamt of being a singer. He just needed someone who would motivate and support him when he was still a student. Thanks to his mother, he chose to concentrate and shift his career in the path of music. As the time passed by, seeing the love and support from fans, Bishwajit continued to sing and entertain everyone.
It is said that not only Bishwajit but other musicians from Chittagong have always been innovators, bold, risk-takers, and the prime movers of the first great generation of Bangladeshi rock. That is why Bishwajit took the risk of giving up the financial stability of his family business, boarded a train to Dhaka and stayed in a hotel. His journey in the beginning of his career was quite a challenging experience. He was a hunger-artist waiting to conquer the world of music. He had the thirst for fame.
We often hear that 2 artists become rivals or competitors if they both gain equal popularity. However, this was not the case in the case of Kumar Bishwajit. In many interviews, Bishwajit had talked about the good bonding and friendship with his old friends like Naquib Khan, Khaled Hassan Milu, and Ayub Bachchu who were all popular individually. They all used to write songs in lazy winter afternoons; songs of love and loss; songs that became the defining touchstone for Bangladeshi pop culture.
Kumar Bishwajit has always been a loyal and dedicated singer. No matter what, the show must go on – is what he believes it. In an interview, he shared a funny incident that once on the morning of a concert, he broke his leg. He still went on the stage (of the concert) with his leg in a cast and sitting on a wheelchair. That time, the audience thought it was just a prompt he was using for singing the song ‘O Daktar’.
We all like to see or know what and how our favorite celebrity’s abode looks like, right? Arafat Kazi, the drummer of the Bangladeshi rock band ‘The Watson Brothers’, had the opportunity to visit Bishwajit’s house for an interview. Thanks to Arafat, after he wrote an article about his experience in the Daily Star newspaper, readers could see and know a sneak-peak of Bishwajit’s inside of the mansion. Bishwajit lives at Dhaka’s Uttora. As you enter the main gate of the house, there will be a playful dog, named Candy, who will come towards you and greet you with jumps and kisses. A magnificent foyer leads up to a drawing room. The walls are lined with tables laden with trophies of a storied career: photos, artwork, the stray musical instrument, and lots of awards. Besides stairs, there is an elevator inside his house which he installed for his late mother.
A philosophy that Bishwajit swears by is believing in being unique. He thinks one should not lose his selfhood even if he is inspired by someone else. Furthermore, he believes in patriotism. According to him, we may improvise and update the culture but that should be only for the enrichment of our own culture. We have to keep the root of our culture in mind and then contribute as much as we can for our nation.
Being a singer himself, Bishwajit also surely has his own favorite singer and songs. In interviews, he has said that he is a die-hard fan of Manna Dey; “Ami Ajibon Shudhu Bhul Kore Gechi” is one of the top most favorite songs by Manna. Also, the songs of Hariharan and Adnan Sami are said to enchant Bishwajit a lot.
As he has sung songs for different Bangla films, what is/are his own favorite films? He has said that the films “Hirak Rajar Deshe” by Satyajit Ray, “Bancharamer Bagan” by Tapan Sinha and “Ora Egaro Jon” by Chashi Nazrul Islam are his favorite Bengali movies for their unique stories and a Hindi movie named “Kissa Kursi Ka” is also his favorite.
Bishwajit is also a booklover. He prefers to read the books of poems; specially the books of “Sher O Shayari”. By reading those, he can find some new words and themes which in turn gives him the platform to create something new into music.
Manna Dey and Kishore Kumar have always been his idols. He claimed that the 2 legendary Indian singers are like his teachers of all time.
In marital life, he got married to Naima Sultana. In 2001, the couple was blessed with a son, Kumar Nibir, who is currently staying at Toronto, Canada for his study purpose. Bishwajit is therefore busy roaming between Canada and Bangladesh all the time.

Awards and Achievements:

The love and passion that Bishwajit has for music and singing, has earned him several awards. He is still recognized and well respected by Bangladeshi music lovers, which is one of the greatest lifetime achievements too.
He is the 2-times winner of the Bangladesh National Film Award. Under the category of “Best Male Playback Singer”, he received the award for the films Shami Strir Wada in 2009 and Ma Amar Chokher Moni in 2011. Additionally, he has also won the Bangladesh National Film Award as “Best Music Composer” for the film Shami Strir Wada in 2009. So actually in total, he won the prestigious award 3 times!
Besides these awards, numerous organizations have rewarded this great singer. Film Bangla has awarded him the “Best Playback Singer Male Award” for the film Jaago – Dare to Dream in 2010. Other awards achieved by Bishwajit include Channel-I film award, Channel-I performance award, Bachosas, Binodon Bichitra etc. Very recently, Rotary Club of Uttara in 2021 awarded him for his excellent performance in his particular field.

Book:

Kumar Bishwajit not only has been entertaining music lovers, but he brought good news for the bookworms too! In 2022, at the Ekushey Boi Mela, an autobiography of his, titled “Abong Bishwajit”, was released. The book launching program was held at the National Art Gallery auditorium of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy. State minister for cultural affairs, KM Khalid, was present as the Chief Guest in the program.
As it is an autobiography book, the author of the book was not the singer himself, but the renowned singer and composer Joy Shahriar. Bishwajit felt that Joy has both the quality and skill required to undertake the project of writing his book. The author Joy thought that because not many works have been done documenting the lives of renowned Bangladeshi cultural personalities, he should write a book on Kumar Bishwajit as he is one of the popular and greatest singers of Bangladesh, alive till date. Bishwajit also expressed heartfelt gratitude to the author that the book could be written and published while he is still alive.
The book was published by Aajob Prokash and it is available online at Rokomari.com and Aajobprokash.com.
The book is supposed to open the unread pages of Bishwajit’s life. It features the childhood days and teenage years of Bishwajit, his illustrious music career and others. Furthermore, the book contains a good number of photographs depicting Bishwajit’s personal life and career.

Conclusion:

With his melodic voice, Kumar Bishwajit has been winning the hearts of millions of music lovers’ hearts for many decades until now. He is one of our nation’s prides. He is hopeful for the newcomer singers of Bangladesh. Though he thinks they are talented, he advises that they invest more thought and energy on original tracks rather than relishing on old hits songs just to get instant fame. He hopes that the younger generation will take lessons from the ups and downs of his and other singers’ lives.
