Bengali Singer

Sabina Yasmin is one of the most prominent singers in Bangladesh. She is widely recognized as a playback singer in Bengali cinemas. This famous singer has contributed to our country with her mesmerizing voice for more than 54 years. She has achieved a record 14 times the Bangladesh National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer. 

Yasmin has given her melodious voice on more than ten thousand songs and recorded over 1,500 songs for films in total. In 1984, she was awarded Ekushey Padak and in 1996, the Government of Bangladesh honored her with the Independence Day Award. Yasmin achieved the Meril Prothom Alo Lifetime Achievement Award in 2021.

Early Life

Sabina Yasmin was born on 4 September 1954 in Dhaka (East Pakistan). Her hometown is Satkhira. She spent her childhood in Dhaka with her family. Her father’s name is Lutfur Rahman she worked in the Provincial Civil Service of the British Raj. Yasmin’s mother was Mouluda Khatun, a vocal artist who learned lessons from the musician Ustaad Kader Baksh. 

Yasmin has four sisters. She is the youngest among them. All of her elder sisters are well-known singers named Farida Yasmin, Fauzia Yasmin, and Nilufar Yasmin. The first song she learned was “Khokon Moni Shona” at her home with their household harmonium. At the age of 7, she performed her first ever stage show. In 1964, she started singing in a radio program named “Khela Ghor”.  Her classical music mentor was P.C. Gomez.

Education

Sabina Yasmin completed her schooling at a local school in Dhaka. After finishing Intermediate, she got her admission to Dhaka University. There she finished her graduation and post-graduation in Sociology. Besides her amazing singing talent, she is also a very bright student. 

Career

Sabina Yasmin started her career as a child artist at the age of thirteen. In 1967, she made her debut with the song “Modhu Jochona Dipali” for the movie titled “Agun Niye Khela” as a playback singer. The movie was directed by Zahir Raihan. Eventually, she got the opportunity of her first breakthrough through the song “Shudhu Gaan Geye Porichoy”. Because of her mesmerizing voice, she even got several awards from President Ayub Khan.

Yasmin’s melodious singing voice was even discovered by famous musician Altaf Mahmud while visiting her neighbor’s house. That’s how she got the chance to continue her career working under Altaf Mahmud. There she sang for a number of famous movies such as Nayantara, Anowara, Taka Ana Pai, and so on. Gradually, she seemed to perform with some renowned personalities like Subas Das, Alauddin Ali, Satya Saha, Khan Ataur Rahman, Gazi Mazharul Anwar, and Ahmed Imtiaz Bulbul.

In the 1960s, Yasmin gave her melodious voice to several musical sectors. She has been active as a singer in films, television, radio, and gramophone companies as well. 

In the 1970s, she appeared as a lead singer in a number of popular songs. “Eki Shonar Aloy” is one of the most famous songs that uplifted Yasmin’s singing career as a leading singer. Eventually, she gave her voice to some widely popular songs such as Shudhu Gaan Geye Porichoy, Tumi Je Amar Kobita, Tumi Acho, and so on.

During the Liberation War, she even encouraged our freedom fighters by singing some unforgettable patriotic songs like “Swajan Harano Diner Samarane, Sob Kota Janala, Swadhinata Tumi, Sei Rail Liner Dhare, and many more.

In the 1980s, Yasmin elevated her popularity by singing in Indian Films. She got an opportunity to work in the Indo-Bangladesh joint production film titled “Anyay Abichar”. She sang two songs directed by R. D. Burman named “Jalpari” and “Cherona Cherona Ghaat” with the legendary singer Kishore Kumar. 

Later, in the 1990s to the 2010s, she came up with a lot of hit songs. She even gave her melodious voice to the new generation by singing some popular songs Preme Poreche Mon, Boroshar Prothom Dine, Dui Noyoner Alo, etc. Her song “Premiker Buk Jeno Sukher Nodi” with the winner of Channel-I Sera Kontho, Imran was featured in the top list for many weeks. 

Yasmin also featured on an album named “Praticchabi” with her daughter Badhon. The mother-daughter duo has given voice on four songs in the album. Mahidul Islam and Rajesh Gosh have directed and composed the duo’s album.

Contribution, Awards, and Achievements

Sabina Yasmin is one of the most famous singers in our country. Because of her mesmerizing singing skills, she got the highest honorary awards of Bangladesh National Film Award 14 times. None of the singers of Bangladesh got such a huge honor and respect. 

The first time she got Bangladesh National Film Award for being the Best Playback Singer in 1975 for her work in “Sujon Sakhi”. After two years, in 1978, 1979, and 1980, she got three back-to-back National Film Awards for “Golapi Ekhon Traine, Sundari and Kosai.

Eventually, from 1984 to 2018, she won 10 more National Film Awards as the Best Playback Singer. Besides the National Film Award, Yasmin achieved Ekushey Padak in 1984 and Independence Day Award in 1996. She received the Firoza Begum Gold Medal in 2016. In 2021, she along with Runa Laila was honored with Meril Prothom Alo Lifetime Achievement Awards.

Personal Life

Sabina Yasmin has been married three times. She first tied the knot with Anisur Rahman. But later they separated because of some unknown reason. They have a daughter named Fairooz Yasmin Badhon who is also a singer. 

Then she got married to Amir Hossain and they have a son named Srabon. After some years, they also got divorced. In 1998, Yasmin met with Kabir Sumon and later the couple tied the knot. Kabir Sumon is a famous Indian-Bengali musician and political activist as well. 

In July 2007, Yasmin was diagnosed with a disease “Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma”. On 12 June, she was admitted to Labaid Hospital. There, doctors found her suffering from an infection of the spleen. That’s why she had to go through an emergency operation on 21 June. 

Unfortunately, her health did not improve much and thus she had to fly to Singapore on 11 July for better treatment. Being recovered she returned to Bangladesh after three and a half months. Now, she is living with her family in Dhaka.

Controversies

Sabina Yasmin is one of the pioneers of the Bangladesh Film Industry. She is so dedicated and passionate about her singing. Even so, having so much honor and popularity around the world, the singer has always seemed to have a very simple life. 

Her ordinary living and simple lifestyle have made her personality more unique. The way she interacts with people in such a warm and soothing way makes her a wonderful human being as well. That’s the reason, this incredible legend is far away from all controversies.

Legacy

Sabina Yasmin is a prominent singer who gave a new dimension to the music industry of Bangladesh Film. The legend not just elevated the music of our country. Moreover, she has represented our country around the whole world. 

In an interview, Yasmin shared some sweet memories of her life. Once she participated in the Bangladesh Film Festival in Mumbai along with a lot of stars including Lata Mangeshkar. She was insisted to sing a Bengali Folk song on the stage by Sachin Dev Burman. So, Yasmin sang “Naiyare Nayer Badam Tuila”. 

At the end of the song, she noticed Lata Mangeshkar was coming on the stage. She was quite afraid of meeting her as she was only 25 at that time. But she just not only met Mangeshkar. Even she praised Yasmin a lot for her mesmerizing voice and incredible singing skills. Yasmin said, “I was Blushing”. SD Burman took a photo of them saying, “I am taking a photo with two Latas from two countries”. Even now she considers the day “One of the greatest achievements of my life”.

Conclusion

Who knew a 6-year-old girl singing a children’s song would become a legend one day? Maybe that was the reason, that the little girl got a huge response from the audience with so loud cheers demanding one more song in her first-ever stage show. From the 1960s to the 2020s, the legend has gifted the nation with a huge number of outstanding melodious songs. No matter how far we go, if one is asked to talk about the name of the Bangladesh Music Industry, the first name that will be ever remembered is Sabina Yasmin.
