Early Life
Bulbul Ahmed was born on 4 September 1941. His birthplace was Medinipur, Bengal Presidency, British India (now old Dhaka, Bangladesh). He was the eighth son of Khalil Ahemd and Moslema Khatun. Bulbul Ahmed’s father Khalil Ahmed was a government employee and a prominent actor.
He had seven siblings, six sisters and one brother. Bulbul Ahmed was the youngest among them. As two of his sisters died of a premature death, the whole family was in severe grief. But when his parents were blessed with him, the family became so delighted. They even distributed sweets as tabarak to their neighbors. That’s why his parents kept his name “Tabarak Ahmed”.
From a very early age, Bulbul Ahmed had a severe interest in films and dramas. Initially, his brothers used to fulfill his hobbies. But as he became addicted to watching movies, his brother discouraged him from watching. He even used to cry a lot for that. So, whenever his father acted or directed in any film, Bulbul Ahmed used to hide behind the curtain or doors to watch the shooting. His mischievousness was not hidden from his father. During that period, some theaters of Dhaka named Paradise, Britannia were quite famous for English movies. That’s when his father used to take him to the theater to watch movies.
Whenever Bulbul Ahmed was asked to share some precious moments of his early age. He always seemed to recall the blissful moments he spent with his family. However, the precious moments didn’t last long as he lost both of his parents in a very short duration. His mother left him in December 1957 and just after the next year, he lost his father as well. He became covered with severe loneliness. But during that time, his siblings came next to him and encouraged him to move forward.
Education
Bulbul Ahmed started his studies at Kolkata Muslim Girls School. But because of his father’s transfer, he had to come to Dhaka and get admission to Dhaka Collegiate School. There, he completed his schooling. Later he attended his HSC examination from Notre Dame College and finished graduation in Arts.
After graduation, he took admission to Dhaka University in the Department of History and passed the MA with distinction. Though he was a bright student and paid great attention to his studies, still he did not let go of his passion. Even putting his best effort into his studies, he performed at several college functions and stage dramas as well.
Career
You will be surprised to know that this iconic “Mahanayak” started his career in 1963 through a Radio program titled “Onurodher Ashar”. He enjoyed the job but in reality, the paid money was not enough to live a livelihood. That’s why some of his well-wishers advised him to apply for bank jobs. Later he joined United Bank (now Janata Bank) as an Apprentice Officer in the Motijhil Head Office. After six months, he was transferred to Chittagong. But he joined the branch of Dhaka again as Branch Manager. Though he worked as a banker for ten years, he still didn’t put behind his acting passion.
Bulbul Ahmed stepped into his acting passion through a stage drama in 1958. In the annual program of MC College in Sylhet, he took his first step in acting. He performed in Rabindranath Tagore’s famous drama “Sesh Rokkha” in the role of Godai. Along with some of his friends, he organized a theater group named “Shyamoli Shilpi Shongho”. The theater group came into the limelight during the appearance of a stage drama titled “Ulka” in the British Council Auditorium. Bulbul Ahmed appeared as Shubir in the drama. The group also arranged some popular stage dramas like Baro Ghonta, Kanakori, Godhulir Prem, Manchitro, and Album.

Among them, “Borof Gola Nodi” written by Jahir Raihan was the most notable one as he gained huge appreciation there. His incredible acting made him so popular that he even started to get the opportunity of the leading roles in all the rest dramas by Jahir Raihan.
He made his debut on the silver screen in 1973 through the film “Yea Kore Biye”. Behind stepping on the journey of his silver screen, Abdullah Yousuf Imam made a great contribution. The director encouraged him with all his heart to make him the hero of the silver screen. He even kept his name from Tabarak Ahmed to Bulbul Ahmed during the promotion of the film. Bulbul Ahmed also put in immense effort and made himself worthy of all of his beloved expectations.

This story was taken from a popular novel by Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay.
