A BIOGRAPHY OF AREF KARIM
Aref Karim FCA is a British accountant and hedge fund manager who was born in Bangladesh. He is the founder, CEO, and Chief Investment Officer of Quality Capital Management (QCM), with ultimate responsibility for the company’s operations, investment strategies, and research. Aref has extensive expertise in all aspects of portfolio management, with a focus on the development of quantitative and systematic investment methodologies.
QCM is a systematic global macro hedge fund manager that uses liquid and regulated futures markets to invest in a diverse range of financial and commodities assets. Aref’s attitude at QCM is based on the same ideas he followed at ADIA and during the course of his three decades in the hedge fund sector. It is based on the accumulation of long-term wealth through investing techniques that provide investors with strong economic intuition. They should follow the thought process of a fundamental macro trader while being rigorously performed using clutter-free and strong systematic models. Rather than ‘fitting’ tactics to previous market situations, they should be resilient and created with minimum optimization.
Aref Karim is a Chartered Accountant with a Fellowship of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in the United Kingdom. As a Senior Investment Manager, he joined the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (‘ADIA’), a sovereign wealth fund based in the United Arab Emirates. He was in charge of the institution’s multibillion-dollar Alternative Investing Portfolio’s pioneering launch and provided advice on its investment principles, methods, and asset allocation. Early Life of “Aref Karim” :
Karim was born in Pakistan’s East Bengal province (now Bangladesh). He has three brothers and six sisters and is the youngest of ten siblings. He went to a private American missionary school before attending an American college where he studied English and Economics before enrolling in university. When the Bangladesh Liberation War broke out, the institution was forced to close, and Karim resumed his studies in Karachi, Pakistan.
He left East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) in the early 1970s during the first year of his master’s degree when he was caught in the middle of the Bangladesh Liberation War and took advantage of the chance.
Karim’s father entered the civil service and then the British administration, where he rose through the ranks to become a top figure in the Bengal government under British control until 1947.
Career:
Aref Karim relocated to London, where he worked as an articled clerk. He became a chartered accountant in 1978.
Karim joined the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA) as a financial manager on a two-year contract after working as a senior audit manager in public practice in London. He got into investment management after two years, four years, six years, and twelve years. As Senior Investment Manager at ADIA, he was in charge of a multibillion-dollar Alternative Investment Portfolio’s investment rules, strategies, and asset allocation. Before returning to the UK, he worked at the facility from March 1982 until May 1995.
Karim switched from purchasing (allocation) to selling (fund management) in September 1995, and in December 1995, he established his own hedge fund, Quality Capital Management (QCM), situated in Weybridge, Surrey. He moved to Weybridge largely to send his children to school there. He is a member of the board of directors, the firm’s CEO, and the Chief Investment Officer, with responsibility for the firm’s investment strategy and research. QCM has given more than 600% increase to its investors in the years since, with only two negative years. According to the Sunday Times Rich List, it has assets worth around £150 million. In 2008, the hedge fund profited £42.9 million on sales of £49.3 million, yielding a 59 percent return.
Karim holds a bachelor’s degree in physics, chemistry, and mathematics, as well as a certificate in chartered accounting. He also invests in hedge funds. In addition, he is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of England and Wales (ICAEW).
