A BIOGRAPHY OF ANNISUL HUQ

Annisul Huq is a name that conjures up images of hope, bravery, and inspiration. He was the mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation and a Bangladeshi entrepreneur and television program host. He played numerous roles during his life, including television personality, businessman, and politician, and he excelled in each of them.He had a net worth of US$3.25 million, according to affidavits presented to the Election Commission in March 2015.

Annisul Haqlaunched many efforts after being elected mayor in 2015 to improve the quality of life in DNCC. He led the municipal corporation’s effort to dismantle unauthorized constructions that littered the walkways from Tejgaon’sSatrasta to the Farmgate neighborhood.He persisted in dismantling the unlawful constructions and eventually improved the length of road by planting trees on the islands. In 2016, he also declared the route a no-parking zone.

In an effort to enhance the city’s cleanliness, the DNCC mayor raised employment perks for city corporation cleaning personnel. AnnisulHaqhad a tendency of checking in on the cleaning crew late at night or first thing in the morning. The mayor announced a scheme to replace all of DNCC’s streetlights with LEDs as part of his environmental objectives.

His other major accomplishments as mayor of Dhaka North include declaring a no-parking zone from Amin Bazar to Shyamoli, delivering invoices directly to contractors’ offices, establishing 4,000 additional bus routes around Dhaka, erecting 22 U-loops, and tearing down 20,000 illegal billboards.

He also put in place measures like prohibiting rickshaws from main city streets, installing CCTV in important Dhaka neighborhoods, and building a slew of public restrooms.

He had a slew of additional ideas for making Dhaka a better city in every way.

AnnisulHuq was a well-known ready-made clothing exporter both at home and abroad before he became mayor.

He was also well-known for hosting a TV show on Bangladesh Television in the early 1980s. He had several face-to-face meetings with politicians in this capacity, even interviewing Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and BNP chairman Khaleda Zia before the 1991 election.

For decades, Annisul Haq had been a full-time businessman. He founded Mohammadi Group in 1986 after a spell in electronic media and has served as its chairman ever since. He then moved on to lead key commercial organizations such as the Saarc Chamber of Commerce and Industry, South Asia’s leading trade group.

He was also the president of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), the country’s largest garment exporters’ association, and the apex trade organisation FBCCI.

Annisul Haqwas a surprising selection by the ruling Awami League for the campaign to become the first DNCC mayor, despite having no evident political affiliations, and he went on to win the April 2015 election by a landslide.

Early Life and Education of “Annisul Huq”:

Annisul Haq was born in Sonapur, Noakhali, on September 27, 1952. His father was Shariful Huq and mother was RowshanAraHuq. In 1970, he passed SSC from DinajpurZilla School. He graduated from the University of Rajshahi with a bachelor’s degree in economics and a master’s degree in economics from the University of Chittagong. His father was an official of the Bangladesh Ansar.

 

Television Career:

Beginning in the 1980s, Annisul Huq was a frequent host on Bangladesh Television. He’s hosted interviews with politicians and other notable figures.

On Bangladeshi television, he has always been a delightful face. ‘EkonyShomoy’ was his debut TV show, and he subsequently had a regular biweekly show called ‘Bola Na Bola’ for almost two years. In the meanwhile, he has aired two EID ANONDO MELA, in which he interviews a diverse range of individuals ranging from musicians to high-profile criminals, street beggars to Bollywood star Dilip Kumar.

Business Career:

Annisul Huq founded his own business, Mohammadi Group, in 1986 and served as the company’s chairman until his death. In the textile and apparel business, the company employed 7,000 people in 2007. The conglomerate also has interests in real estate, information technology, a power generating firm that contributes directly to the national grid, and a distribution company that represents a number of international television networks. Nagorik is the name of the group’s independent television station.

Annisul Huq was president of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI), and the Independent Power Producers Association.

Political Career:

Annisul Huq was elected mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation in the 2015 City Corporation election on the Bangladesh Awami League ticket. He was a surprising choice by the Awami League, given none of the party’s other leaders ran for the job.

He vowed to make Dhaka a clean, green, and safe city as mayor, despite criticism for his participation with foreigners. As part of the clean-up effort, 20,000 unlawful billboards were dismantled. Mayor Huq has made it plain that entrenched interests would not be tolerated in his clean-up initiatives.

Annisul Huq also stated that he would work to reduce corruption among government employees.

Awards:

National ICT Award, (2017)

National Information and Communication Technology Awards is the only state and highest prize in the Information and Communication Technology sector of Bangladesh. The award is being given since 2017.

Personal Life:

Annisul Huq was born on 27 October 1952, in Noakhalito Shariful Huq and Rowshan Ara Huq. General Abu Belal Mohammad ShafiulHuq, Huq’s younger brother, was the 15th Chief of the Bangladesh Army.

AnnisulHuq was married to RubanaHuq who is known  for BBC 100 Women, Ex-President BGMEA and Chairperson of the Mohammadi Group. Together they have three children – Navidul Huq, Wamiq Umaira and Tanisha Fariamaan Huq.

Death:

On July 29, 2017, the businessman-turned-mayor traveled to the United Kingdom on family business. On August 13, he was hospitalized to London’s National Neuroscience Hospital after passing out during medical testing for neurological concerns.

Annisul Haqwas eventually diagnosed with cerebral vasculitis, which is an inflammation of the brain’s blood vessel walls. For treatment, he was taken to the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU). On October 31, his health improved, and he was transferred to the hospital’s rehabilitation center.

Annisul Haq, on the other hand, was admitted to Wellington Hospital’s ICU on Tuesday when his health worsened. After being in a sedated state for more than three months, on November 30, 2017, Thursday, at 10:23 p.m. Bangladesh time, he died at the age of 65.
