A BIOGRAPHY OF ANNISUL HUQ

Annisul Huq is a name that conjures up images of hope, bravery, and inspiration. He was the mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation and a Bangladeshi entrepreneur and television program host. He played numerous roles during his life, including television personality, businessman, and politician, and he excelled in each of them. He had a net worth of US$3.25 million, according to affidavits presented to the Election Commission in March 2015.

Annisul Haq launched many efforts after being elected mayor in 2015 to improve the quality of life in DNCC. He led the municipal corporation’s effort to dismantle unauthorized constructions that littered the walkways from Tejgaon’s Satrasta to the Farmgate neighborhood. He persisted in dismantling the unlawful constructions and eventually improved the length of road by planting trees on the islands. In 2016, he also declared the route a no-parking zone.

In an effort to enhance the city’s cleanliness, the DNCC mayor raised employment perks for city corporation cleaning personnel. Annisul Haq had a tendency of checking in on the cleaning crew late at night or first thing in the morning. The mayor announced a scheme to replace all of DNCC’s streetlights with LEDs as part of his environmental objectives.

His other major accomplishments as mayor of Dhaka North include declaring a no-parking zone from Amin Bazar to Shyamoli, delivering invoices directly to contractors’ offices, establishing 4,000 additional bus routes around Dhaka, erecting 22 U-loops, and tearing down 20,000 illegal billboards.

He also put in place measures like prohibiting rickshaws from main city streets, installing CCTV in important Dhaka neighborhoods, and building a slew of public restrooms.

He had a slew of additional ideas for making Dhaka a better city in every way.

Annisul Huq was a well-known ready-made clothing exporter both at home and abroad before he became mayor.

He was also well-known for hosting a TV show on Bangladesh Television in the early 1980s. He had several face-to-face meetings with politicians in this capacity, even interviewing Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and BNP chairman Khaleda Zia before the 1991 election.

For decades, Annisul Haq had been a full-time businessman. He founded Mohammadi Group in 1986 after a spell in electronic media and has served as its chairman ever since. He then moved on to lead key commercial organizations such as the Saarc Chamber of Commerce and Industry, South Asia’s leading trade group.

He was also the president of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), the country’s largest garment exporters’ association, and the apex trade organisation FBCCI.

Annisul Haq was a surprising selection by the ruling Awami League for the campaign to become the first DNCC mayor, despite having no evident political affiliations, and he went on to win the April 2015 election by a landslide.
