Shykh Seraj is one of the most prominent personalities in Bangladesh. He is a pioneer development journalist and an Ashoka and Bangla Academy fellow. Because of his incredible contribution to the agriculture sector, he achieved two of the country’s highest civilian honors, Swadhinata Puroshkar and Ekushey Padak. He was also honored with the highest award for agricultural journalism, the FAO A.H. Boerma Award from the United States, and the Gusi Peace Prize (Philippines). Hridoye Mati O Manush is a popular agro-documentary directed and hosted by Shykh Seraj. He is also the Founder Director and Head of News at a TV channel titled Channel I.

Early Life
Shykh Seraj was born on 7 September 1954. His birthplace is in Chandpur district, East Bengal, Dominion of Pakistan (now Bangladesh). His father’s name is Obaydul Haque and his mother is Ershadunnesa. He spent his childhood with his family in Dhaka.
Education
Seraj finished his SSC from Khilgaon Govt. High School. Then he completed his HSC from Notre Dame College, Dhaka. Later he took his admission to Dhaka University. There, he earned his M.A. degree in geography.
Career
Seraj started his career through a television series named “Mati O Manush (Men and Soil) in 1982. The series used to be telecast on Bangladesh Television. As Bangladesh is a land of agriculture, Seraj had an avid desire to investigate the root of farm management. That’s the reason he made the program based on investigative documentaries and found out the solutions to various issues that usually farmers face. He started to reach out to the rural farmers and visit the remote areas to talk with farmers. They could easily share their problems during farming with him and he helped the farmers to overcome them as well. Moreover, by watching his TV series, a lot of farmers could overcome their damages by learning proper farming management.
In 1999, Seraj joined a popular TV channel titled Channel I as a director of News. Later, in 2004, he started a new documentary named Hridoye Mati O Manush (Soil and Men in Heart) on Channel I. The show was an uplifted version of his previous TV series Mati O Manush.
This time his show Hridoye Mati O Manush (Soil and Men in Heart) began with a new spirit. The show got a huge appreciation from all over the country. A lot of unemployed people found new hope through agriculture through his show. People started to step into different farming projects like nursery projects, poultry farming, applying hybrid seeds, and so on. Thus, people started to earn their livelihood by their means and the country also became enriched with grains as well.
As Seraj’s show Hridoye Mati O Manush was chiefly based on the rural economy he used to reach out to people like distressed women, peasants, and unemployed youth. He taught them about farming with scientific methods. That’s how, soon the people could overcome their miserliness through farming. He also worked to educate people in agricultural sectors like livestock, poultry, and pisciculture.
Besides educating rural farmers, Seraj also holds the real picture of the poor farmers about how they were hostaged by the hand of middlemen eating out the hard-earned outcome of the production of vegetables by farmers. The show also holds the concepts like suggestions to formulate policy guidelines, examine the capacity of the land to produce various segments of hybrid crops, and inform the farmers about the newly invested grains. During a disaster, the agro scientist’s success in enacting laws related to agricultural expansion and modern technology was also included in the program.
Seraj knew very well that a one-sided move was never enough to change the economy of the country. He even felt the need to show the farmers proper strategies to bring out the best through farming. That’s why he started the documentary “Vegetable Production VS Farmer’s Earnings”. He threw his 95 serials based on 95 main reports, 65 short reports, 25 success stories, and effective tips on agriculture. Seraj even upheld some effective strategies of successful farmers from Japan, China, and Vietnam in this documentary.
Besides making documentaries, Seraj also created a game show based on farm skills like raft racing, skill sowing seeds, and climbing oiled banana trees. Only farmers are allowed to participate in the show. That’s how Seraj also encourages the farmers to educate themselves with the best farming skills in an entertaining way.
On the basis of the program Hridoye Mati O Manush, Seraj also made another show named “Chaad Krishi ”. There, he came up with a number of famous personalities such as Babita, Moushumi, Kumar Bishyajit, Rejwana Chowdhury, and so on to motivate the people of the city about farming. He showed how the townspeople could join farming even without having a proper place. Being inspired by his show, a lot of people came forward to roof gardening. That’s how the urban areas are also turning green day by day.
On 11 February 2023, Seraj created a documentary in Bengal Ganabhaban titled “Sheikh Hasina’s Farmyard”. Sheikh Hasina, the face of the Bengal Ganabhaban and the 12th Prime Minister of Bangladesh was present during the whole documentary. There, Seraj interviewed the Prime Minister and talked about the future of the country’s agriculture.
In 2023, during the holy month of Ramadan, Seraj appeared in another show based on Islam. The show was Ramadan’s special documentary titled “Kafela”. He visited various historical places and upheld the religious virtues and memorable incidents of Islam in the show.
Contributions, Awards and Achievements
Shykh Seraj is a prominent personality in Bangladesh. His great contribution to the agricultural sector has made a huge change in the country’s economy. That’s the reason this honorable personality was awarded about 34 times by national and international organizations.
Seraj got his first award, Nattya Sheba Puroshkar in 1983. He achieved the Rotary International Award six times respectively 1989, 1991, 1993, 1996, 2005, and 2007. The highest honor of Bangladesh Ekushey Padak was also achieved by him. He was even honored with the Independence Day Award in 2018.
Besides, in 1993, Seraj achieved both the National Youth Awards and National Poultry Award. He got the National Fish Fortnight Award in 1994 and 1996. Seraj also achieved the President’s Award on Agriculture in 1995, and Young Asia Television Award in 2002. In 2004, he got Sheltech Award, Entertainment Screen Award, and Cultural Reporters’ Award as well. He also achieved a Gold Medal in the National Fish Fortnight Award, the Bangabandhu Gold Medal, and a Gold Medal in Development Economy in 2005.
In 2006, Seraj was honored with four national and international awards Dr. Ibrahim Memorial Gold Medal, Unitrend ‘Son of the Soil’ Award, the Bangladesh Economic Association Gold Medal, and the World Food Program Media Award. He was even honored by the Sir William Beveridge Foundation in 2009. In the same year, he achieved the UNESCO Bangladesh Journalism Awards, the Rotary Seed Award, and the A.H. Boerma Award from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN as well.
Seraj was held in great respect by being honored through the UK’s BCA Golden Jubilee Honor Award in 2010, the House of Commons Honorary Crest (UK) in 2011, and the Green Award from Birmingham Community in 2015. In the same year, he also achieved the Gusi Peace Prize in the Philippines. Because of his incredible endowment in the rural economy, he got the Ranada Prasad Saha Gold Medal in 2016 as well.
Personal Life
Shykh Seraj is married. The couple is blessed with two sons. He is currently living in Dhaka with his family.
Controversies
Even having such an honorable and luxurious life, Seraj is still a very humble man. His interactions with rural people and concern for the poor farmers made him such a deferential personality. Moreover, his honest and simple living and great patriotism for the people of his country have kept him away from all kinds of controversies.
Legacy
Shykh Seraj is an eminent person in Bangladesh. Leaving the luxurious life, how this incredible personality has reached out to the poor rural people is tremendously praiseworthy. Holding his hand, the economy of the country has reached its highest peak like never before. Because of his indispensable contribution, he even got the opportunity of the US Ashoka Fellowship for poverty elimination television program in 1992.
Besides agriculture, his contribution to the development of journalism is also quite credible. Covering some crucial topics like good governance, food security, farmer’s entertainment, and holistic human development, Seraj has attained many great examples of his successful outcomes. He even brought the politicians of agriculture and farmers face-to-face for quizzing about the economy of agriculture. That’s how the politicians came under answerable and farmers are becoming more aware about their rights. That’s why, the country has also honored Seraj with a number of Highest Honor such as the Independence Day Award also recognized as Shadhinota Padak or Shadhinota Award, and Ekushey Padak as well. He also got prestigious recognition from the British House of Commons and the UK’s BCA Golden Jubilee Honour Award. That’s why Seraj is a man who uplifted the country’s honor and economy like none.
