Introduction

Md. Saiful Islam is one of the top businessmen in the country with 35 years of experience in a variety of industries, including shipbuilding, the production of leather goods, dredging, and hospitality. His innovative ideas and diligence have allowed him to grow his business into other sectors, such as textiles. His career in business began in the maritime industry, including ship chartering, ship ownership, ship maintenance, etc. Due to his creative thinking and perseverance, he has grown his business into other sectors, such as leather goods. The company (PICARD Bangladesh Ltd.) that he founded and exports leather goods each year and receives the Export Trophy from PICARD Lederwaren GmbH Co. & KG, Germany.

Career

Md. Saiful Islam started his entrepreneurial journey in 1986 in the fields of ship chartering, ship ownership, ship restoration, etc. In collaboration with PICARD Lederwaren GmbH Co. & KG, Germany, he founded a joint venture firm in 1997 called PICARD Bangladesh Ltd. Islam is the president and CEO of Picard Bangladesh Ltd. and a prominent businessman who has held the commercially important person (CIP) title since 1998.

He founded Western Marine Shipyard Ltd. (WMShL), one of Bangladesh’s premier shipyards, in the year 2000. For both international maritime firms and waterways around the world, Western Marine Shipyard has previously produced more than 100 watercraft.

While this was going on, in 2002, he founded Banga Dredgers Ltd, which grew to become one of the biggest privately owned dredging firms.

 With 14 (fourteen) cutter vacuum dredging vessels and supporting vessels, this enterprise is now among the biggest in private business for dredging. The business Banga Dredger takes part in government-funded development initiatives, particularly those that focus on preserving our rivers’ navigability and funding large-scale dredging operations run by the Ministries of Shipping and Water Resources.

Mr. Islam acquired the famed Narayanganj dockyard Banarjee Dock in 2003. It was then renamed Narayanganj Engineering and Shipbuilding Ltd. A rich history of shipbuilding dates back to its establishment in 1920. To meet the challenges of the 21st century, he rebuilt the complete dockyard architecture with a crew of the best and most skilled naval specialists.

To more effectively meet the requirements of cutting-edge ships, the yard’s name was officially changed to “Narayangonj Engineering & Shipbuilding Ltd.” This renovation also improved the yard’s overall functionality. His dedication and work ethic have led to this shipyard being recognized as one of the best in the country for high-quality manufacturing on both domestic and international markets, and it has received ISO certification.

As a joint venture, Islam established Footsteps Bangladesh Ltd. with Euphoric Innovation Pvt. Ltd., a member of the VKC group, in 2019. The JV members get commended for their commitment to the timely delivery of the goods they produce, client approval, and high-quality craftsmanship. The two extremely successful JV partners’ beliefs and ideals form the basis of the business plan for the company.

Recognition

During the years 2008 to 2012, Md. Saiful Islam presided over the Bangladesh German Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BGCCI). The Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Dhaka (MCCI) has chosen Md. Saiful Islam, managing director of Picard Bangladesh Limited, is its president for the year 2023.  

The title of “commercially significant person” (CIP) has been bestowed upon well-known businessman Mr. Saiful Islam since 1998. In addition, he serves as director of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FBCCI) and president of the Leathergoods and Footwear Manufacturers & Exporters Association of Bangladesh (LFMEAB). 

As chairman of Western Marine Shipyard, Narayangonj Engineering & Shipbuilding, Banga Dredgers, Subornobhumi Resorts Meghna, Munshigonj, and Subornobhumi Foundation, he also owns several other positions.

The majority of his interviews focus on his thriving business and Mr. Islam’s contribution to our country’s economy.  With 36 years of managerial expertise in numerous commercial units, Islam is one of the nation’s top businessmen.
