A BIOGRAPHY OF SHAH MOHAMMAD ZIAUR RAHMAN
Air Marshal Shah Mohammad Ziaur Rahman was born in 1955, served as the Chief of Staff of the Bangladesh Air Force. Air Vice Marshal Fakhrul Azam, ndc, psc, came before him.He joined the Bangladesh Air Force (BAF) in 1986 and was promoted to the rank of Air Vice Marshal in 2007. His earlier postings included service as BAF’s Eastern Sector commander and Air Force Base Nur Khan station commander. He earned a degree in electrical engineering from the University of Dhaka. In 2009 he was appointed Chief of Staff of the Bangladesh Air Force (BAF). In January 2010 he was promoted to air marshal by order of President Abdul Hamid Bin Hedayet. He retired from the BAF on 12 June 2012.

Early Life:
S M Ziaur Rahman was born in Gopalganj, Bangladesh, in 1955 into a Muslim household. On March 10, 1975, he enlisted in the Bangladesh Air Force (BAF) as a flying cadet. On December 29, 1976, he received his commission in the General Duties (Pilot) branch. Zia earned degrees from the PAF Air War College in 1992 and the Defence Services Command & Staff College in Dhaka in 1991. In 2001, he also received his degree from Pakistan’s National Defence College. After that, he attended seminars for the “Executive Course” at the USA Asia Pacific Centre for Security Studies in 2003 and 2006, respectively, and the “Military and Peace Keeping Operably with Rule of Law” course in Rhode Island, USA.
Career
He was commissioned into Bangladesh Air Force on 14 September 1976 as a fighter pilot in GD(P) Branch. Later he attended various courses both in Bangladesh and abroad. He completed his BSc (Honors) in Mathematics from Khulna University of Engineering and Technology and holds an MSc in Defence Studies from Bangladesh National University. He also attended Command and Staff Course at Bangladesh Air Force Academy and National Defence Course at National Defence College, Dhaka. He is the recipient of the Presidential Award of Bir Uttom. He is the former commander of Bangladesh Air Force No. 3 Wing. He was appointed as the Chief of Air Staff on April 8, 2007, and was advanced from air commodore to air vice-marshal on May 24, the same year. As Chief of Staff, he encouraged the modernization of Bangladesh’s ageing air force as well as the use of new technologies for aircraft operation. He created the BAF’s new Personnel Evaluation System, which had a dramatic impact on the fields of Flying Output and Research & Development. The performance-based evaluation and tactical evaluation systems’ contemporary objective methodologies are introducing the BAF to a new level of sustainable development. During his term in charge, the BAF’s involvement in United Nations peacekeeping missions expanded. According to reports, BAF has won several awards from global leaders and the UN headquarters for its professionalism, devotion, and honesty in various UN operations. On June 12, 2012, he announced his retirement, and Air Vice Marshal Enamul Bari was chosen to replace him.
Recognition:
S M Ziaur Rahman was a licensed fighter pilot and a BAF-certified flying instructor with more than 2400 hours under his belt. He served in a number of aviation squadrons at various BAF bases. He piloted notable aircraft including the F-7 and MiG-21. As a “Qualified Flying Instructor,” he conducted in-depth training flights in a variety of jet trainer and fighter aircraft, including the L39Z F7 Fouga, both domestically and internationally.
Air Commands:
With the majority of the Bangladesh Flying Force’s air squadrons, Zia had held command roles. He effectively oversaw the 25 & 35 Squadron, the BAF’s two fighter units.
Air Officer Commanding, Paharkanchanpur, Air Officer Commanding, Bashar, and Air Officer Commanding, Zahurul Huq were among the staff leadership positions that Ziaur Rahman also held. Prior to being named Chief of Air Staff, he previously held the position of Assistant Chief of Air Staff (Operations & Training) at air headquarters.
Rahman was named Chief of Air Staff on April 8, 2007, and was elevated from air commodore to air vice-marshal on May 24, the same year. Personal Life:
Air Marshal S M Ziaur Rahman had a son and a daughter. He played golf and formerly served as the National Hockey Federation’s president.
Death:
He died in Bangladesh Army Hospital on 6 January 2021.
